Here are some photo’s from the Mau’Umae Trail Hike.  This trail will lead you to: Ka.Inawa’au Nui Summit (3.5 miles) and Lanipo Summit (3.7 miles).

To get to the trail head you take H-1 and exit at Koko Head Avenue in Kaimuki. Turn mauka (toward the mountain) and follow Koko Head Avenue across Waialae Avenue. Then go one long block, turning left one short block to the stop sign at Sierra Drive. Turn right and follow Sierra Drive as it switchbacks up Wilhelmina Rise and Maunalani Heights, finally reaching Maunalani Circle. Turn right and continue around the circle to the trailhead at the upper part of the circle. I have a photo from the trailhead.

Starting from the top of the Wilhelmina Rise / Maunalani Heights neighborhood the hike continues up the ridge to the crest of the Koolaus. The summit can be reached in about three hours and doing so will amount to a 7 mile round trip. A shorter hike of any length still offers rewarding views and a choice of nice lunch spots. Because you go up and return by the same route, hikers can turn around at any point. This hike is rated moderately strenuous due to the many uphill sections and the mostly exposed overall route.
